Interpersonal skills are the skills which we use in our daily life when we communicate with other peoples, both individually and in groups. Peoples having strong interpersonal skills are often more successful in both their professional and personal lives. Some people naturally have great interpersonal skills while Others have to learn and practice interpersonal skills in order to master them. Below are some ways to develop the interpersonal skills.
Attitude can make or break a team effort. We have all worked with a complainer at one time or another and it is an uphill climb. Progress does not get the recognition that it deserves and arguments can ensue about productivity. When it seems that more time is being spent in keeping morale high then in doing the best work that you can do then you have a big, big problem. The solution starts in yourself. Stay positive. Let your excitement for a project show in your work and in the communications associated with your work. A positive attitude can be epidemic and while you cannot always change the mind of that one doubting person on the team your boss and your teammates will notice your enthusiasm and be happy for it.
First of all believe in yourself, you should be confident. Confidence comes across in the way you walk and in the way you speak. It comes across in your writing. If you don’t believe what you are saying then how can your message have impact on others? To help cultivate confidence, avoid ending observations with questions such as ‘wouldn’t you agree?’ or ‘do you think this applies here?’. This will show that you are not confident. Make your statements with authority and leave it to others to question when you are quoting facts or when you are making your own personal recommendations. Realize that what you have to say is of importance and let that reflect in your words and overall attitude.
Clarity is the most important thing which is needed in the verbal communication. For this, one should think efficiently and speak thoughtfully. In a communication, when anyone is asked about something or when we have to give a response to something, then rather than just juggling out the answers, one must stay calm and in a very thoughtful and clear manner, answer that very question.
A communication loop is incomplete without a listening process. An effective listener can only be an effective communicator. In-fact listening is such a bonafide field that it is included in the most popular theoretical theories too. A person who listens effectively to another person knows even the minute details of the process. Thus, it becomes feasible for both the communicator as well as the listener to communicate with each other in a proper manner. It is a vital component of the interpersonal skills.
Questioning is not only a device for gaining information, but it is also a great way to start a conversation. The more questions a person asks another, the more he will get to know about the topic. Moreover, it is a great way to start a conversation. It shows the interest and can spontaneously draw someone’s attention to your desire to listen to them.
Social Awareness
It is very important for an individual to be socially aware. When we are in a dedicated project, we often get involved into it so much that we neglect the other person’s social problems or issues. It is important too. Because only a person who has complete social awareness can bring up more opportunities.
